Aloe Vera

aloe vera Aloe Vera

The Italians call aloe the miracle plant – and it may very well be.

Over 3,500 years ago, the Egyptians began to use aloe. Then the Chinese, Europeans, and American Indians (among others) discovered its healing abilities.

African tribes people did (and still do) use aloe as a tea, gel, juice, salve, or decoction for themselves and for their animals. They use it to treat problems associated with childbirth and weaning, eye disorders, menstrual problems, fevers and influenza, snakebite, toothache, muscular dystrophy, meningitis, colic, worms, tuberculosis, sores, constipation, hemorrhoids, and ringworm. Some tribes also use the powdered leafs as snuff, the juice as a preservative, and the gel as a mouse repellent.

Finding out how and why

Why does aloe work so well? All the answers are not yet in, but we are finding out more about it every day. We know that aloe has a high water content, which can keep the injured areas moist and sterile without depriving them of air. This promotes healing. Aloe also contains magnesium compounds, and we know that magnesium is a natural painkiller. And it contains several vitamins and allantoin, which nourishes tissue and provides nutrients needed for cell growth and repair.

Many scientists who were skeptical at first about aloe are how studying the properties of this amazing plant. Even the Food and Drug Administration has approved its use for first – aid treatment of wounds.

Your own miracle

Many products that you can buy in the drug store contain aloe, but most contain too little to do much good. In health stores, you can buy aloe gel that is about 99% pure (acceptable additives are potassium sorbate and Irish moss). Or you can buy an aloe vera plant.

The plant, a succulent which looks like a cactus, is a member of the lily family. It is very easy to take care of. You can grow aloe indoors in a pot in cold climates, or outdoors in warmer areas. In the wintertime, it can go several months without sunlight or water. Allow your aloe to become dry between waterings – and keep it out of direct sunlight or the leaves will turn brown.

But be careful what you buy. Be sure that you have an aloe vera, the only variety of the plant that has medicinal effects. Other types of aloe, like the lace aloe are only decorative. They have no therapeutic value.

Put it to good use

Next time you burn your finger on a hot iron, go to your aloe vera for relief. Cut off one of the oldest, outermost leaves. Slit it open, scrape out the gel, and smooth it on your burn. Or you can attach the opened leaf to your burn with a bandage. Although it might sting and hurt even worse for a few seconds, the sting will quickly stop. Leave the leaf in place for about 24 hours, and the burn will disappear – you probably won’t even have scar. (Unused leaf can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days.)

You name it

An excellent remedy for painful sunburn is to apply cold aloe gel (only the 99% pure type, with no dyes or perfumes) after a shower. Continue to apply it a few times a day. Usually, the redness disappears, and the skin does not peel.

Aloe gel can be used to soothe insect bites, fever blisters, and minor wounds. It can also be used for other skin problems, such as abrasions, rashes (including poison ivy), athlete’s foot, acne, eczema, and shingles.

To use aloe to treat sports injuries like sprains and burise, use the following method. Clean the injured area. Then crush some aspirin into a fine power, mix it with aloe vera, and apply it. The aloe vera will penetrate the skin quickly, taking the aspirin directly into the bloodstream.

Aloe vera has also been used to treat frostbite. Using this treatment, frostbitten areas, which otherwise might have become gangrenous, healed in six to ten days with no side effects.
